Save Our Retail Jobs Legislation

With a potential sale of the Mother’s Market chain looming, UFCW Local 324 is seeking passage of local legislation to protect workers’ jobs in a sale.

The Irvine Grocery Worker Retention Ordinance is one example. It is modeled after a state law designed to help grocery workers hold onto jobs in the event of a merger or sale of the business, and it applies to smaller stores like Mother’s Market. It requires companies to retain workers for 90 days after a sale and requires just cause for terminations before then.

Mother’s Market workers attended the Irvine City Council meeting introducing that ordinance and spoke in support.

David Shtilkind, a juice bar employee at Mother’s Market Irvine, said:

“We can help make these stores better for our community, for the shoppers, and the workers – the locals! We don’t have to be collateral damage in a private equity sale.”
